Do you think nanotubes will amount to anything useful?

Lina asked:

A nanotube is a man-made tube made of carbon atoms and it is stronger than diamond. But so far scientists are only able to make them 5 nanometers in diameter. But scientists hope to someday make big ones that can be very strong building materials.

Eventually, yes. They will be used for everything, literally.

Definately, because the strength to weight ratio is ridiculously high. This will make it possible for longer suspension bridges, lighter vehicles, lighter body armor, and possibly an elevator into space.

This material is very expensive than the alternatives present on the market. So until there is no problem so important to spend an extra buck or a profit to be made I don’t see the usefulness of this material from an economic point of view.
